How Etsy's abandoned cart coupon works
When a shopper adds items to their cart and doesn't complete checkout within your configured window (default 2 days), Etsy automatically sends them a message containing a one-time coupon code. You choose the discount percentage: 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25%. The shopper has a short window — usually 48 hours — to use it. The feature is free to enable; you only pay the discount if someone actually returns and completes a purchase.
Why the math matters more than the headline
The instinct is to pick the highest coupon to recover the most carts. But every recovered cart also earns less — Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee and 3% payment processing fee both apply to the discounted price, and the $0.20 listing renewal fee still fires on each sale. At a 25% discount on a $30 item you gross $22.50 per recovered cart and net roughly $19.30 after fees. At 10% you gross $27.00 and net $23.00 — meaningfully more per order, even if slightly fewer buyers convert. The comparison table above shows this tradeoff at your exact numbers.
What this calculator does not estimate
This tool assumes a fixed recovery rate regardless of which coupon you choose (you set the rate; we run the math). In practice, a 25% discount may recover a higher share of abandoned carts than a 5% discount — because a bigger incentive is more likely to break a buyer's hesitation. The comparison table is most useful for understanding the margin tradeoff at a given recovery assumption. You should test different coupon levels over a few weeks in your own shop and adjust the recovery rate input to match what you observe.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my monthly visits and conversion rate?
In your Etsy Seller Dashboard, go to Stats → Traffic. The "Visits" column shows total shop visits for the period (set it to the last 30 days). Your conversion rate appears below the visits chart — it's labelled "Conversion rate" and shown as a percentage. Both numbers update daily.
How do I enable Etsy's abandoned cart coupon?
In your Etsy Seller Dashboard, go to Marketing → Coupons, then scroll to the "Abandoned cart buyers" card and click "Set up". Choose your discount percentage (5, 10, 15, 20, or 25%), confirm the expiry window (the default is 2 days), and activate. Etsy automatically sends the coupon to shoppers who add items to their cart but don't complete checkout within the window you set.
What is a realistic recovery rate for an abandoned-cart coupon?
E-commerce abandoned-cart emails typically recover 8–15% of abandoned carts when a coupon is included — with variation based on your niche, price point, and how competitive your category is. Etsy-specific data isn't publicly published. The default in this calculator is 10%, which sits in the middle of the industry range. Enter your own estimate if you have analytics data from a previous campaign; even a conservative 5% often makes the coupon worth enabling.
Why does a higher coupon percentage sometimes earn less net revenue?
Two forces work against each other: a bigger discount attracts more back, but each recovered order earns less (and Etsy's percentage fees apply to the lower discounted price). In most scenarios the 10–15% range gives the best net result — enough incentive to recover carts without giving away too much margin per order. The comparison table in this calculator shows all five options side by side at your numbers.
What is the add-to-cart rate and where do I get it?
The add-to-cart rate is the percentage of visitors who add a product to their cart — whether or not they then complete the purchase. Etsy's native Stats page does not show this metric directly. The calculator defaults to 3× your conversion rate (e.g. if your CR is 2%, we assume roughly 6% of visitors add to cart, and two-thirds of those abandon). If you have Etsy Plus, Google Analytics, or another analytics tool showing add-to-cart data, you can enter your actual rate in the optional field for a more accurate estimate.
Do these fee calculations match what Etsy actually charges on a couponed sale?
Yes. When a buyer uses your abandoned-cart coupon, Etsy charges fees on the discounted sale price (not the original list price). This calculator applies the full verified fee stack — 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and $0.20 listing renewal — to the post-discount price, exactly as Etsy does. Does the abandoned-cart coupon apply to buyers who have already purchased from me?
Etsy sends abandoned-cart coupons to any shopper who adds to cart and doesn't complete checkout within your configured window — including previous buyers. Each coupon is single-use and tied to that specific cart session, so a repeat buyer won't be able to reuse the same code on a future purchase.
