YouTube Monetization Milestone Tracker

Enter your current numbers and weekly growth rate — get the exact gap to each YPP threshold, a growth what-if table, and an honest entry-level revenue estimate once you qualify.

Growth what-if table

How long does your timeline shift if your channel grows faster or slower? All scenarios use the same current subscriber and watch-hour counts, only the weekly growth rate changes:

Ad revenue once you qualify

A channel at the YPP entry level (≈4K watch hours / year, roughly 5 000–7 000 monthly long-form views) typically earns:

Low estimate (global audience, lifestyle/entertainment)$5 – $15 / month
Mid estimate (mixed US audience, education/how-to)$15 – $30 / month
High estimate (US-heavy audience, finance/tech)$30 – $50 / month

Revenue scales with views, not subscriber count. See the YouTube RPM Calculator for a precise estimate once you know your niche and upload cadence. Most channels at the YPP threshold earn $5–50/month initially — that grows as you publish more content and your back catalogue accumulates watch time.

How YouTube monetization works

The YouTube Partner Program is the gateway to ad revenue on your channel. Until you qualify and are accepted, your videos earn $0 from ads regardless of how many views they get. This is why tracking your progress toward the thresholds matters more than any single viral view count.

The two YPP paths

YouTube offers two parallel ways to qualify. The long-form path requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in the last rolling 12 months — both at the same time. Watch hours from private, unlisted, or deleted videos don't count, so keeping your library public is important. The Shorts path requires the same 1,000 subscribers but 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days instead of watch hours. For most new creators the long-form path is more realistic; the Shorts path suits channels that already go viral on Shorts.

What the thresholds actually mean in real numbers

4,000 watch hours is 240,000 minutes. At an average watch-through time of 5 minutes per video, that's 48,000 video completions over 12 months — roughly 4,000 per month, or 130 per day. On a channel with 10–20 public videos, that typically requires each video to be pulling consistent search traffic, not just a few viral spikes that don't repeat.

Why subscribers and watch hours move at different speeds

Subscribers accumulate one per new follower. Watch hours accumulate every minute a viewer spends on your content. A channel with five high-retention tutorial videos can rack up watch hours much faster than subscribers, because the same person might watch the same video multiple times without subscribing. Conversely, a channel with a loyal but passive audience might hit 1,000 subscribers before 4,000 watch hours. The bottleneck indicator in this tracker tells you which metric is holding you back so you can focus your energy there.

The fastest way to grow watch hours on a small channel is usually playlist optimization — grouping related videos so that autoplay carries viewers from one video to the next. A viewer who watches three 10-minute videos in a row contributes 30 minutes to your total, not just the 10 minutes from the video they clicked on.

Frequently asked questions

What are the exact YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requirements?

As of July 2026, YouTube offers two paths to YPP: the long-form path (1,000 subscribers + 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months), and the Shorts path (1,000 subscribers + 10M public Shorts views in the last 90 days). Either path unlocks ad monetization. You also need an active Google AdSense account and must comply with YouTube's monetization policies. Your channel must be set to "made for kids" = No for most categories.

Are watch hours and Shorts views tracked separately?

Yes. Watch hours from standard (long-form) videos count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. Shorts views count separately toward the 10 million Shorts-view threshold. A Shorts view does NOT add to your watch hours total. This is why creators who upload both formats often track two separate progress meters — both of which this tool shows.

Do watch hours from private or unlisted videos count?

No. Only watch hours from public videos count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. If you switch a video from public to private, those watch hours are removed from your rolling 12-month total immediately. Premieres count as public once the premiere ends. Live replays count once the replay is made public.

How accurate is the time-to-milestone estimate?

The estimate assumes your current weekly growth rate is constant — which is almost never true. Early channels often grow faster as the algorithm starts suggesting their content; established channels can plateau. Use the what-if table to see how sensitive your timeline is to growth rate changes: the difference between 0.75× and 1.5× your current rate is often several months. Treat the estimate as a planning horizon, not a promise.

Does YouTube's YPP have a minimum channel age?

As of the 2023 policy update, YouTube removed the previous 12-month minimum channel age requirement. A channel can apply as soon as it meets the subscriber and watch-hour thresholds. However, review times typically take 4–6 weeks after you submit, and YouTube may reject or defer applications from very new channels if there is insufficient content history to assess policy compliance.

How much will I earn once I hit 1K subs and 4K watch hours?

Very little at first — and that is normal. A channel at the minimum YPP threshold typically earns $5–50 per month in ad revenue, depending on niche, audience geography, and upload frequency. Finance and business channels earn toward the high end; lifestyle and entertainment channels earn toward the low end. Ad revenue grows with watch time and uploads, not subscriber count. Use the YouTube RPM Calculator for a more precise estimate once you know your niche and upload cadence.

Can I lose my YPP eligibility after being accepted?

Yes. YouTube reviews channels continuously after acceptance. Violations of the monetization policies (spam, misleading content, hate speech) can result in demonetisation. If your channel drops below the thresholds — for example, after removing many public videos — YouTube may remove you from YPP at their next scheduled review. Maintaining consistent uploads and keeping existing public videos live protects your eligibility.
