Etsy Seller VAT & Import Tax Reference
Etsy automatically collects and remits VAT, GST, or equivalent taxes for buyers in 49 countries. You do nothing for those sales. Below is the complete verified list — plus the thresholds that require you to register independently. Verified from Etsy's published policy, July 2026.
Countries where Etsy collects VAT / GST automatically
For sales to buyers in any of the countries below, Etsy adds the local tax at checkout, collects it from the buyer, and remits it to the tax authority. You receive your sale price minus Etsy's fees — no VAT registration or filing required for these sales.

When YOU must register for VAT yourself
Even with Etsy collecting VAT on your sales, once your business crosses certain thresholds you become responsible for registering independently and filing your own returns. These thresholds apply across all your sales channels — not just Etsy.
rolling 12-month UK taxable turnover
Threshold raised from £85,000 to £90,000 on 1 April 2024. Once you register for UK VAT, you file your own quarterly returns and Etsy should no longer collect UK VAT on your behalf — notify Etsy of your VAT registration number.
annual cross-border intra-EU B2C sales (combined for all EU countries)
Below €10,000: charge your home-country VAT rate. Above €10,000: register for OSS in your home EU country to report VAT across all EU sales in a single return, or register locally in each destination EU country. This threshold covers all intra-EU B2C sales across all channels — not just Etsy.
annual Australian GST turnover (all channels combined)
Australian sellers with total GST turnover (across all platforms and channels) of A$75,000 or more must register for GST and file quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS). Once GST-registered, you handle your own GST reporting — Etsy's automatic GST collection typically no longer applies to your Etsy sales.
total taxable supplies in any four consecutive calendar quarters
Canadian sellers whose total taxable supplies exceed C$30,000 over four consecutive quarters are required to register for GST/HST with the CRA. Provincial sales taxes (PST/QST) have separate registration rules. Once registered, contact Etsy to update your tax settings.
annual taxable supplies in New Zealand (all channels)
New Zealand sellers with annual taxable supplies of NZ$60,000 or more must register for GST. Once GST-registered, you handle your own GST filing and Etsy's automatic collection no longer applies to your sales.
Who collects? — Quick examples
| Scenario | Who handles VAT | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UK seller → EU buyer (any of 27 EU countries) | Etsy | EU OSS rules; Etsy adds local VAT at checkout |
| US seller → UK buyer | Etsy | UK VAT 20% collected & remitted by Etsy |
| US seller → Australian buyer | Etsy | Australian GST 10% collected & remitted by Etsy |
| UK seller (VAT-registered) → UK buyer | Seller | UK VAT-registered sellers handle their own VAT; notify Etsy of your VAT number |
| EU seller (OSS-registered) → EU buyer | Seller | OSS-registered EU sellers file their own cross-border returns |
US state sales tax — already handled
Etsy is a marketplace facilitator under US state sales tax law in all US states that have enacted such rules — effectively all states with a sales tax. Etsy automatically collects and remits US state sales tax on all Etsy transactions, just as it does for the countries in the table above. You do not need to register for sales tax in any US state for your Etsy sales. If you sell through other channels (your own website, Amazon, etc.) you may have separate nexus obligations.
Important caveats
- Rates change. VAT rates are set by each country's government and can change without notice. This table was verified July 2026 — always confirm the current rate via each country's tax authority before quoting prices inclusive of tax.
- Customs duties are separate. The VAT Etsy collects does not cover customs duties (tariffs) on physical goods crossing borders. High-value shipments may still be assessed customs duty by the destination country's customs authority.
- B2C only. These rules apply to business-to-consumer sales. If you sell to VAT-registered businesses in other countries (B2B), different rules apply — typically a zero-rate or reverse-charge mechanism.
- Not legal advice. This reference is a practical summary for Etsy sellers. For your specific situation, consult a qualified tax advisor familiar with international VAT.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Etsy collects VAT" actually mean for me as a seller?
Etsy is registered as a marketplace facilitator (also called a "deemed seller") in the countries in the table below. When a buyer in one of those countries purchases your item, Etsy automatically adds the correct local VAT or GST rate at checkout, collects it from the buyer, and remits it directly to that country's tax authority. You receive your sale proceeds minus Etsy's regular fees — you do not receive the VAT, and you do not file any VAT return in those countries. You have zero administrative burden for those sales.
Do I need to register for VAT in countries where Etsy collects?
No — as long as your only sales there are through Etsy. Etsy's marketplace-facilitator status covers the VAT obligation on your behalf. You are not required to register for VAT in those countries solely because of your Etsy sales. The exception: if you have other sales channels (your own website, another marketplace) that take you above a country's registration threshold, you may need to register independently for those channels, at which point the rules change.
I'm a UK seller who is already VAT-registered. Does Etsy still collect UK VAT on my sales?
No. Etsy's UK VAT collection is designed for sellers who are not UK VAT registered. If you are registered, you are responsible for accounting for UK VAT on your Etsy sales yourself and must provide Etsy with your UK VAT registration number. Etsy should then not charge buyers UK VAT on your listings — the listings will show prices excluding VAT, and you charge and account for it in your own VAT returns. Always confirm the exact process in your Etsy Shop Manager > Taxes settings.
What is the EU €10,000 OSS threshold and how does it affect me?
The €10,000 threshold applies to intra-EU cross-border business-to-consumer (B2C) sales across all platforms and channels combined. If you are an EU seller and your total cross-border B2C sales within the EU stay below €10,000 per year, you can charge your home-country VAT rate on all sales. Once you exceed €10,000, you must either register for the EU's One Stop Shop (OSS) — a single registration in your home country that covers all EU countries — or register for VAT individually in each EU country where you sell. Etsy collects VAT on your Etsy sales regardless, but those sales still count toward your €10,000 threshold calculation.
What happens to US sales tax? Etsy isn't in the table for the USA.
The US uses sales tax, not VAT. Etsy acts as a marketplace facilitator for US state sales tax in all states that have enacted marketplace facilitator laws — which covers virtually all US states with a sales tax. This means Etsy already collects and remits US state sales tax on your behalf, just like it does for the VAT countries in this table. You generally do not need to register for or collect sales tax separately for Etsy transactions in any US state. (If you sell through other channels like your own website, you may have separate nexus obligations.)
How often does this table change?
Etsy adds new countries to its marketplace-facilitator registrations regularly — typically a few new entries each year as more countries enact digital services VAT rules or update their marketplace laws. This reference is verified July 2026 and updated quarterly. Always cross-reference with Etsy's official Taxes policy page (etsy.com/legal/vat/) before making compliance decisions, especially if your home country or a key buyer market isn't on this list.
What is an "import VAT" and is it different from what Etsy collects?
Import VAT applies when physical goods are shipped across an international border and the customs value exceeds the destination country's de minimis threshold. For most countries in this table, Etsy's marketplace-facilitator registration covers the VAT on the sale, but for large shipments above customs thresholds, the buyer's national customs authority may still assess additional import duties (customs duty, not VAT). This is most relevant for high-value physical goods. For digital downloads, no import duties apply — only VAT, which Etsy collects.
My buyer is in a country not on this list. Do I need to collect VAT?
If the buyer's country is not in this table, Etsy does not collect local VAT on your behalf for sales to buyers there. Whether you personally have a VAT obligation depends on that country's domestic rules — most countries only require foreign sellers to register once they exceed a local turnover threshold. For small Etsy shops with only occasional sales to a specific country, the threshold is rarely exceeded. If you have significant sales to a country not on this list, consult a tax professional familiar with that jurisdiction.
