Why you can’t just add profit to cost
If your mug costs $8.50 and you want $7 profit, listing at $15.50 doesn’t work: Etsy then takes ~6.5% + 3% of $15.50 plus fixed fees, leaving you short. The fee comes off the price, so the price has to be solved for — that’s what this does. How do I price an Etsy product?
Start from your real cost (product + your shipping cost), decide the profit you want per sale, then add enough on top to also cover Etsy’s fees — 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, and the $0.20 listing fee. Because the percentage fees apply to the price you’re setting, you can’t just add your profit to your cost; this calculator solves that circular math for you.
What profit margin should I aim for on Etsy?
After all fees, 30%+ is healthy and gives you room for the occasional Offsite Ads attribution. 20–30% works at volume. Below 20%, one ad-attributed sale can wipe out the profit.
Should I price so I can survive Offsite Ads?
If your shop is under $10k/year you can opt out, but past that you’re enrolled permanently and pay 12–15% on attributed sales. Pricing as if some sales will pay that fee means an ad-driven order is still profitable instead of a loss. Toggle "price for Offsite Ads" to see the safer number.
Does this assume free shipping?
Yes — it prices as if shipping is folded into the item price (free shipping), which is what most Etsy buyers expect and what converts best. Put your real shipping cost in the "your shipping cost" field so it’s covered.
