How to use this calculator
Break-even units is the minimum number of monthly sales at the new price that produces the same monthly profit you make now. If you currently sell 50 units and the break-even is 37, you can afford to lose up to 13 sales per month (26%) before the price increase stops helping.
The volume scenarios table shows what your monthly profit looks like at 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50% of your current sales pace. Green rows mean the new price still beats your current profit at that volume. Red rows mean you need more sales than shown to break even on the raise.
For a healthy Etsy listing with 50+ reviews, a 10–20% price increase typically drops conversion by 0–5% — often well within the cushion this calculator shows. Check Etsy Stats → Listings → Conversion Rate before and after any price change to confirm. If the rate holds, consider another incremental increase in 4–6 weeks.
Use the Fee Calculator to see a full per-sale fee itemisation. Use the Profit-Per-Hour Calculator to check whether the new price covers your time. Use the Monthly P&L Calculator for a shop-wide profit view after a price change rolls out.
Frequently asked questions
Why does raising my price sometimes barely change the break-even point?
Because Etsy's fees are percentage-based — the 6.5% transaction fee and 3% payment processing fee both scale with your price. So a higher price means higher absolute fees, but you keep roughly the same share of each additional dollar. What really moves the needle is the fixed $0.25 payment fee and $0.20 listing fee: on a $10 listing those eat about 4.5% of revenue, but on a $30 listing they're only 1.5%. That's why raising prices on low-priced items often has a bigger per-unit profit improvement than the raw price difference suggests.
What is COGS and what should I include in it?
COGS stands for "cost of goods sold" — the direct cost per unit you sell. For handmade goods: materials + packaging + a fair fraction of consumable supplies (glue, thread, labels). For print-on-demand: the base product cost (what Printify or Printful charges you). Do NOT include your time (capture that separately with the Profit-Per-Hour Calculator), fixed overhead like software subscriptions, or Etsy's fees — the calculator adds those on top of your COGS automatically.
How do I know if I can afford the sales drop this tool predicts?
The break-even units figure is a worst-case floor — it's the minimum monthly sales at the new price that matches your current monthly profit. In practice, price increases on Etsy often have little impact on conversion rate for well-established listings: buyers on Etsy shop by search intent, not price comparison, and a listing with 50+ reviews tends to hold its rank and conversion rate even after a 10–20% price increase. A useful real-world test: raise the price on one listing for 30 days and compare the conversion rate in Etsy Stats before and after. If your conversion rate stays within a few tenths of a percent, the increase is safe.
Should I account for shipping in the price input?
If you charge buyers for shipping (i.e., "buyer pays shipping" in your listing), enter that amount in the Shipping charged to buyer field — Etsy charges transaction and processing fees on the combined item + shipping total, so the calculator needs both figures to be accurate. If you offer free shipping, leave that field at zero — your shipping cost is part of your COGS.
What is the Offsite Ads fee and when does it apply?
Offsite Ads is Etsy's program that advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, and other platforms. When a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges an extra 15% fee (or 12% if your shop made over $10,000 in the previous 12 months). The fee applies only to the sale attributed to the ad click — not all your sales. If Offsite Ads is enabled and a significant share of your sales come through this channel, toggle the checkbox to model the impact on both the current and proposed price.
This calculator shows my current margin is negative — what does that mean?
It means your COGS is higher than what you receive after Etsy fees — you are losing money on every sale at the current price. This is common for sellers who underpriced early to gather reviews. The calculator still shows how the proposed price compares: if the proposed price makes profit per unit positive, every sale at that price is an improvement over the current situation, regardless of volume.
The break-even shows I need 35 of my current 40 sales — is that too risky?
Whether a 12% cushion is acceptable depends on your listing's maturity and review count. For a listing with fewer than 20 reviews, a price increase might reduce conversion enough to matter. For a listing with 100+ reviews and a stable ranking, a modest price raise (under 20%) typically has minimal conversion impact. The safest approach: raise the price on your highest-review listing first, watch the conversion rate in Etsy Stats for 4–6 weeks, and only roll it out to other listings once confirmed safe.
