Understanding the two revenue models
These are production platforms. You pay a fixed base cost per item printed and shipped, then sell in your own storefront (Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce) at whatever price you choose. Your margin grows as your selling price rises.
Profit = Selling price − Base cost
Margin = Profit ÷ Selling price
These are full marketplaces. The platform handles production, fulfilment, customer service, and storefront. You upload designs and earn a royalty — on Redbubble, the default artist markup is 20% of their base price (≈16.7% of the final sale price); MBA pays a fixed royalty from their published table.
Your take = Platform royalty at their standard price
(You do not control the sale price)

Frequently asked questions
Why do Printify and Printful show higher margins than Redbubble or Merch by Amazon?
Printify and Printful are production-only platforms — you pay them to print and ship, then sell in your own store (Etsy, Shopify, etc.) at whatever price you choose. Because you control the price, your margin scales with the gap between your selling price and their base cost. Redbubble and Merch by Amazon are full marketplaces — they handle everything including the storefront and customer acquisition, so they keep the lion's share of the sale price and pay you a fixed royalty (about 16–37% depending on the platform and product).
Are Printify base costs really this low? What's the catch?
Printify connects you to many independent print providers globally. The base costs shown here are from mid-tier providers such as Monster Digital and District Photo — competitive options, but not the cheapest possible. Printify also has a Printify Premium subscription ($24.99/month) that discounts base costs by up to 20%, which can further lower your effective cost. The "catch" is that quality, turnaround time, and reliability vary between providers. Printful typically costs more but offers more consistent quality and direct integrations.
Does the selling price I enter affect Redbubble and Merch by Amazon?
No — Redbubble and MBA rows always show their fixed royalty at their standard price point. On Redbubble, the platform sets a base price for each product and artists add a markup (20% by default), so the final sale price is controlled by Redbubble's base plus whatever markup you set. Merch by Amazon similarly uses a fixed pricing structure with royalties set by Amazon's royalty table. Your entered selling price only affects the Printify and Printful rows, where you genuinely control your own store's price.
Which platform is best for beginners?
It depends on your goal. If you want to test designs without running your own store, Redbubble and Merch by Amazon have zero upfront work — just upload designs and let the marketplace handle everything. If you want higher margins and control, Printify + Etsy is the most popular combination for sellers who want to scale, though it requires setting up and managing your own shop. Printful is worth considering if you value consistent quality and don't mind the slightly higher base cost.
Why isn't Merch by Amazon available for mugs or posters?
Merch by Amazon's catalog is focused on apparel: standard T-shirts, premium T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, long sleeves, and PopSockets. They do not currently offer mugs, ceramic products, or paper posters in their standard royalty catalog. Printify, Printful, and Redbubble all offer mugs and posters.
Do these margins include Etsy fees if I sell through Etsy?
No — for Printify and Printful, the margin shown is your gross margin after production cost only. If you sell through Etsy, you also pay Etsy fees: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and $0.20 listing renewal per sale. Use the Etsy Fee Calculator or Etsy Pricing Calculator to layer in those fees and find your true take-home after both production costs and Etsy fees.
How often do base costs change, and how do I know if these are still accurate?
These base costs are verified July 2026. POD platform pricing changes regularly — Printify updates provider costs when their providers change rates, and Printful typically announces pricing changes a few weeks in advance. Always confirm the current base cost directly in the Printify catalog or Printful pricing page before setting your selling prices. The Redbubble 20% default markup and MBA royalty structures tend to be more stable, but should also be verified before making pricing decisions.
What margin should I target for a healthy POD business?
Most experienced POD sellers target at least 30–40% gross margin after production cost, and ideally 25–35% after all selling fees (Etsy, Shopify, etc.) as well. Below 20% gross margin, small cost increases or slow months can quickly turn a product unprofitable. Below $5 absolute profit per unit, the business rarely survives shipping issues or refund requests. Use the Break-Even Units Calculator to find how many monthly sales you need at each margin level.
