Every platform hides its fees differently. Pick yours, enter your numbers, and see what you actually keep per sale — updates as you type.
How each platform charges
Etsy stacks three fees: 6.5% transaction (on item plus shipping), 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and the $0.20 listing fee that renews per sale — full breakdown in our Etsy fees guide. Shopify takes no per-sale cut beyond card processing (2.9% + $0.30 basic plan), but you pay the subscription whether you sell or not. Amazon Handmade is a flat 15% referral fee. eBay charges a ~13.6% final value fee plus $0.30 per order in most categories. For pricing strategy on top of the math, see how to price POD products.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Etsy take per sale?
For US sellers: a 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping, payment processing of 3% + $0.25, and a $0.20 listing fee that renews on each sale — roughly 10% plus $0.45 on a typical order. Offsite Ads sales pay an additional 12–15%.
How much does Shopify take per sale?
Shopify itself takes no marketplace cut — you pay the monthly subscription instead. Card processing on the basic plan is 2.9% + $0.30 per order. Remember to mentally spread the subscription across your monthly orders.
How much does Amazon Handmade take?
A flat 15% referral fee per sale with no listing fees and no separate payment processing — simple to model but the largest percentage cut of the major platforms.
What is a good profit margin for print on demand?
30% or better after all fees is healthy. Between 20–30% works at volume. Below 20%, a single ad click or an Offsite Ads attribution can erase the profit on a sale.
Does free shipping cost me money?
Yes — the carrier still gets paid, just by you instead of the buyer. Fold the real shipping cost into your item price; on Etsy, fees come out nearly the same and free-shipping listings convert better.
