Frequently asked questions
What is dimensional (DIM) weight and does it affect my POD products?
Dimensional weight is a calculated weight based on package size rather than actual weight. USPS uses it for Priority Mail packages over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches): DIM weight (lb) = length × width × height ÷ 166. If the DIM weight is higher than the actual weight, you're billed at the DIM weight. Good news: most POD products (T-shirts, mugs, hoodies) ship in boxes well under 1 cubic foot, so DIM weight doesn't apply. It only matters for large, lightweight items like big canvas prints or framed art.
Does USPS Ground Advantage charge dimensional weight?
No. USPS Ground Advantage (which replaced Parcel Select in 2023) charges by actual weight only — no dimensional weight. Most Printify and Printful shipments within the US use Ground Advantage for standard POD products, so DIM weight is usually not a factor. It only comes into play if your provider upgrades to Priority Mail for faster delivery or if you ship very large packages.
Should I offer free shipping on Etsy POD products?
It depends on your margin. Etsy gives free-shipping listings a slight ranking boost, and buyers prefer it — but shipping typically costs $4–6 per order. If your margin after product cost and Etsy fees is thin, free shipping can erase your profit entirely. The rule of thumb: if shipping is more than 20–25% of your sale price, offering free shipping puts serious pressure on margin. Use the calculator above to see the exact impact before deciding.
How much does shipping typically cost for POD products?
Printify and Printful base shipping rates vary by provider and product, but typical US domestic first-item rates are roughly: T-shirt $3.99–$4.49, mug $4.49–$4.99, hoodie $4.99–$5.99, poster $3.49–$4.49, canvas print $6.49–$8.99. Always check your actual provider rates in the Printify/Printful dashboard — these change and vary by fulfillment location.
What Etsy fees does this calculator include?
The margin calculator includes Etsy's full fee stack: 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and the $0.20 listing fee. It does not include Offsite Ads (12–15%) since that's only charged on ad-attributed sales. If you're enrolled in Offsite Ads, use the Etsy Pricing Calculator to price with that fee included.
